Who am I?

Image

Hello everybody and welcome to my page!

I am a PhD. student at the University of Wolverhampton under the supervision of Prof. Ruslan Mitkov, Prof. Diana Inkpen and Prof. Gloria Corpas Pastor.

Education

In 2006, after four wonderful years spent in University "Al.I.Cuza", I received my BSc. degree from Computer Science Faculty, Iasi, Romania. My BSc. diploma thesis is entitled: Prototype for Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Protocol and it is a research application for telecommunication domain. Currently, I am investigating translationese and translation universals extensively using supervised machine learning techniques.

Research INTERESTS

  • Translationese 100%
  • Translation Universals90%
  • Machine Learning100%

research

At the moment I am researching a few hypotheses from Translation Studies domain. To this end I am happily applying my previous experience with Machine Learning techniques and Natural Language Processing tools in the field of Translation Universals.

Machine Learning

The wonder world of statistical algorithms that allow computers to learn from experience, to recognise complex patterns based on observed data, and to make intelligent predictions for a given task.

Translationese

The land of translation is the interdisciplinary science studying the theory, the description and the application of translation. Translationese and Translation Universals are hypotheses about the use of language in translated texts written by professional translators.

Both

While the potential characteristics and universals of translated texts have been pointed out in several controversial debates, machine learning techniques may have an important impact on the investigation of these translational hypotheses. The experiments based on this approach are reported in the following publications.

Research Experience:

  • Presentations to varied audiences including several internal reading groups (Wolverhampton) and international conference seminars (RANLP 2009, LREC 2010, CICLING 2010, CICLING 2011).
  • Involved in various research projects on different topics including: translation memory, machine translation, controlled languages, text simplification, automatic acquisition of comparable corpora.
  • Teaching: a lecture and the laboratory session on "Machine Learning Applications in Natural Language Processing" for Erasmus Mundus Master Students, October 2009
  • Part of the organising committee of the International Workshop on Natural Language Processing Methods in Translation, Lexicography, and Language Learning – event in conjunction with the RANLP Conference, Bulgaria, 2009.
