Feminist Pedagogy
Since the early 1990s, I have been attempting to construct and practice a feminist pedagogy which is congruent with my values and educational aims. In all the classes I teach, I want equality and respect for diversity to be central to the interactions that take place, enabling all students to feel free to learn.I have been inspired by bell hooks and many other feminist educators and influenced by the ideas of Paulo Freire and Carl Rogers.
I base my approach to teaching on three principles
These principles can be expressed more simply in the form of three prohibitions to teachers in their relations with students
- to strive for egalitarian relationships in the classroom
- to try to make all students feel valued as individuals
- to use the experience of students as a learning resource
- don't dominate
- don't humiliate
- don't indoctrinate
The details of the pieces I have published can be found on the bibliography which includes UK sources not commonly found in online lists. Also see the page of quotations relevant to feminist pedagogy from a variety of authors.
